“Paul Merkelo knows no limits” declared one of Germany’s top classical critics in Der Spiegel – and now this charismatic Canadian trumpeter is joining the ECO for a concert that takes baroque music, gives it a quick shake, and stands it on its head. Merkelo unleashes the pageantry and splendour of Georg Philipp Telemann, then leaps forward into the poetry and wit of Haydn’s ever-popular Trumpet Concerto. And to set the mood, our award-winning young guest conductor Adrien Perruchon goes baroque-around-the-clock, as Thierry Escaich and Igor Stravinsky reinvent the 18th century in the most delightfully unexpected way.
