ECO @ 60:  Fauré’s Requiem - Streamed

19:00 Streamed

The ECO has had to cancel the live performance of Fauré’s Requiem with VOCES8 due to the recent imposition of lockdown rules. However, the ECO is delighted to announce that the concert will be streamed on Good Friday as part of VOCES8 Foundation LIVE FROM LONDON Spring Festival. See below for more details of the festival but first:

“Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.”

Fauré composed his much loved mass setting between 1897-1890, and saw this work as much for the living as for the remembrance of the dead. Removing the dread terror of the Dies irae, using instead its final couplet Pie Jesu, set as a tender number for solo soprano, he created a work of divine beauty and sublime tranquility, one of “happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than […] painful experience.”

We are joined once again by our good friends, the world-renowned vocal octet VOCES8, and their artistic director Barnaby Smith to conduct a performance that also includes Fauré Cantique de Jean Racine and Bach Cantata BWV 118 O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht; an evening of divine beauty and tranquility in the heart of Eastertide.

“Details that so often get lost shone; in a time of closing down and fear, this was a performance of bright hope.” - [Review of Messiah, Dec 2020] Seen and Heard International
